Principal’s Message

On Tuesday, April 30 our students and staff will participate in the annual lockdown drill. This is the protocol we would follow in the event of a violent intruder on campus and is a part of The Big Five Protocols developed by the San Mateo County Office of Education, in collaboration with local law enforcement and emergency responders.  While thinking about emergencies on campus can be scary, we plan to focus on how important and empowering it is to be prepared.

Students and staff will practice locking doors, building a barricade and hiding in the classroom today.  Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Big Five Protocols by reading

over the  Big Five Parent Flyer.  If you want to dig a little deeper, take a look at the Big Five Community Packet, both found on our school website.  We hope you’ll continue the conversation at home too. In the event of a true emergency, the best thing you can do as a parent is to stay away from the school (and refrain from calling) until you are notified to come pick up your student.  We understand that is extremely difficult but it’s important for us to focus on students in an emergency. While keeping parents calm and informed is critical, student safety will be our highest priority and it’s best if we can avoid anything that distracts from that.  While we know that you’ll want to be in touch with your child, calling or texting them could put them at risk if noise from their cell phone alerts an intruder to their presence. We expect this drill to bring up a variety of emotions from students. If you feel your child is in need of extra support, please let us know so that we check in with him/her.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast

On Tuesday, April 22 all volunteers are invited to our Volunteer Recognition Assembly at 8:15am followed by an appreciation breakfast in the staff room. We appreciate all you do for the John Gill Community.
