Principal’s Message- Climate Survey

The annual climate survey opens this week. You should have received an email invitation from Dr. Baker today, to participate in the survey. I would like to get input from all families in our Adelante community. I am copying the email from Dr. Baker here:

Dear RCSD Community,

Next week, our school district will launch the Annual RCSD Climate Survey and LCAP Survey.  We need your feedback to make sure that we continue to provide the high-quality, rigorous, and supportive learning experiences that meet our students’ needs.

It is important to us to understand what you think about a variety of factors influencing our students' education, such as family engagement, academic and social support, school safety, and other key areas. The window to participate in the survey will be open Monday, February 5 to Friday, February 23.
Please be on the lookout for a link to this survey via email on Monday, February 5. If you have more than one child in school, we would like for you to focus your answers on the experience of just your oldest child at their school. We recommend that only one survey is taken per household. You may receive reminder emails from Panorama Education, the organization that is administering the survey for the school district.

This survey provides very important information that will help us serve our students and we encourage you to participate. Both surveys were developed with input from parents and staff members.

 Thank you.

Dr. John Baker, Superintendent

Tomás and the Library Lady Performance at Adelante on Friday!

Great news! We have arranged for a performance of Tomás and the Library Lady for this Friday, 2/9! All families are welcome to attend this free event. This play is the boyhood story of Tomás Rivera and how he befriended a librarian in Iowa who encouraged him to read.  Tomás, the child of migrant farm workers, became a writer, a professor, and a national education leader.  Tomás Rivera wrote, “It is impossible to imagine Chicano literature without the migrant worker.” At the time of his death he was the Chancellor at University of California at Riverside.  The campus library now bears his name.

Friday, 2/9                 Seating at 6:30- 7:00                        Performance at 7:00

New State Assessment for English Language Proficiency Begins This Month

This school year, students who have been identified as EL students will participate in the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) Summative Assessment. The ELPAC replaces the California English Language Development Test (CELDT), which is the current required state assessment for English language proficiency that must be given to students who are classified as English learners (EL). Our school district’s testing window for this school year is scheduled for February 1 to March 30, 2018. Parents whose students will participate in the ELPAC will be notified. The ELPAC Summative Assessment is used to measure the skills of our students in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Results from the ELPAC will help our teachers identify the areas in which our students need additional support. Identifying the needs is important in order to provide students with the additional tools to be successful in English language arts/literacy, mathematics, science, and other subject areas in school.

Supporting Reading Progress at Home: A Parent Workshop for K-2 Parents

‘Wondering how you can help your beginning reader practice the skills needed for reading proficiency? Join Cecile Pike, our school’s literacy coach, in a parent workshop on Thursday, Feb. 15th, from 5:00- 6:30. Cecile will provide lots of ideas and activities that you can implement at home to augment the instruction that is provided at school.

This training will be conducted in Spanish, with English translation.

Dinner will be served: 5:00- 5:30

Childcare will be provided.

Coding Club Volunteers Needed

Thanks to a volunteer parent, Adelante will be re-initiating the Coding Club for upper grade students. In order to offer the program to both fourth and fifth grade students, we need parent volunteers. If you are interested in helping, please contact Holly Lindquist at (858)752-4453.

The Family/School Compact

We have 2 weeks remaining in our punctuality contest! Many thanks to those of you who consistently bring your child to school on time.   Aside from the habits you are developing in your child, this contest serves to acknowledge students’ efforts:

Are there prizes?    Yes! There are three prize categories:

  1. The class with the highest punctuality rate (i.e., the lowest score) wins a Movie Night with pizza, hosted by Directora Chris. Parents and siblings are invited!
  2. All classes that maintain 2 or less tardies every day throughout the 20-day competition win a lunchtime pizza party!
  3. All students who arrive to school on time for every day of the contest will receive a slap bracelet!

Message from RCSD Gifted and Talented Education Program

RCSD offers a Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) pull out program for 4th, 5th & 6th graders

located at Clifford and Hoover Schools.  If you would like your child in current grades 3/4/5 tested for GATE this Spring, you can read more information about the GATE program on the Parent Information website.

Parents must complete a permission form for their student to be tested. At the end of the survey, please check that you have seen the "Thank you for your survey" results page.  If you do not see this page, then please go back and complete the survey again until you see this page.  This confirms you have submitted the permission form accurately.
