Preventing Illness at Home

The current recommendations for prevention of the coronavirus (COVID-19) are no different than for colds and flus.

  • Wash your hands - soap or hand gel can kill the virus
  • Cover your cough with your elbow, or with a tissue and then wash your hands afterwards, to prevent the virus spreading
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands, if your hands touch a surface contaminated by the virus, this could transfer it into your body
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Don't get too close to people coughing, sneezing or with a fever - they can propel small droplets containing the virus into the air - ideally, keep 1m (3ft) away
  • Stay home if you're sick

Public health officials are not currently recommending that healthy people wear a mask. Masks are most helpful when worn by those who are already sick, so that they are less likely to transmit the disease to others.
