Summer Resources for Learning and Growth

As the school year winds to a close, the summer season can always be a time for learning and growth! The Redwood City School District (RCSD) instructional coaches, who support teachers with instructional strategies in the classroom, have put together a list of resources to help parents keep students engaged in learning over the summer in the midst of fun activities. 

The following are links to free, family-friendly, at-home mathematics, reading, and science activity resources.


Live Webcams and Tours:
Young scientists can take advantage of live webcams offered by zoos and aquariums. They can observe, take notes, and then choose to research animals further.

  • Back Pocket Learning from UCSC Life Lab. Free, online searchable collection of outdoor science projects for the whole family.
  • Bay Area Discovery Museum. Free activities that boost creativity for the whole family.
  • Bird Lab from Cornell University. Free virtual bird club plus science and nature activities for families at home. 
  • California Academy of Science. At-home free science activities for the whole family.
  • Discover-E. At-home engineering free activity library. 
  • Exploratorium. Free tinkering projects for families at home.
  • Field Science for Families Activities to support families exploring the socio-ecological system of their neighborhoods.
  • Girl Start. Free STEM activities of high interest to girls at home.
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium. Free guided activities for families that reveal the wonders of the ocean.
  • NISEnet. Free from National Informal STEM Education Network (NISE Network), hands-on STEM activities with common household materials.
  • RAFT. Free STEAM activity sheets for families from Resource Area for Teaching.

Recursos de verano para Seguir Aprendiendo 

Aunque haya terminado el ciclo escolar, ¡el verano puede ser un gran momento para que los estudiantes sigan aprendiendo! Aquí les compartimos unas recomendaciones de parte de los capacitadores de enseñanza del Distrito Escolar de Redwood City (RCSD) quienes dan a los maestros estrategias para impartir su materia. Esta lista podrá ayudar a que los padres mantengan a los estudiantes motivados y aprendiendo en forma divertida durante el verano.

Recorridos y Cámaras en vivo:

Para que los jóvenes científicos vean lo que están transmitiendo las cámaras en los zoológicos y acuarios, y observen, tomen notas, e investiguen más acerca de animales.
