Winter–Summer Timeline for Next Phase of Solar Construction Set

Winter–Summer Timeline for Next Phase of Solar Construction Set

What You Need to Know

  • RCSD is moving into the next phase of its districtwide solar energy expansion.

  • Solar construction will roll out at multiple school sites between January and July.

  • The project is expected to generate long-term energy savings and reduce costs for taxpayers.

Redwood City School District (RCSD) is continuing its districtwide solar energy expansion, bringing clean, renewable energy and long-term cost savings to more school campuses. Additional RCSD school sites are scheduled to begin solar installation work in the coming months.

These projects are part of RCSD’s broader effort to reduce energy costs, support environmental sustainability, and protect school resources and local taxpayers over time. Solar canopies installed at school sites will generate renewable electricity while also creating shaded outdoor spaces for students, staff, and families.

Across both phases of the solar program, RCSD expects to save $21.1 million over 25 years, including an estimated $762,000 in savings during the first year once all systems are activated. These savings help relieve pressure on the district’s operating budget and reduce the long-term burden on local taxpayers. In addition, RCSD will receive an estimated $3.88 million through the federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC), further lowering the total project cost.

The total cost of the Phase 2 solar project is estimated at $15.26 million, funded through a combination of Measure T bond proceeds and state School Facility Program (SFP) funds, including reimbursements generated from prior eligible facility projects.

Earlier Phase 1 sites — Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School, Clifford School, Roosevelt School, and the RCSD District Office — already have solar systems installed and operating.

Construction schedules are carefully coordinated to minimize disruption to school operations. While the timelines below reflect current projections, dates may shift as work progresses.

Why Does This Matter?

By expanding solar energy across district campuses, RCSD is lowering long-term utility costs, reducing its environmental footprint, and protecting public resources. These investments help ensure more funding remains focused on students and classrooms while easing financial pressure on the community.

Strategic Organizational Alignment

This work is funded by Measure T, which was approved by voters in 2015. Redwood City School District appreciates the community’s continued investment in maintaining safe, modern, and energy-efficient schools for students and staff.

Superintendent's Message: December 2025: Presence, Partnership, and Learning

Thank you to the many families who thoughtfully plan vacations during scheduled school breaks, including winter break. Doing so helps ensure students are able to be present for learning when school is in session. When students miss school for vacations outside of these breaks, those absences are considered unexcused, and after three unexcused absences, a student is legally considered truant under state law.

Superintendent's Message: November 2025: Board of Trustees Considering Locally Controlled Parcel Tax Measure

In recent years, rising costs and unpredictable funding have made it harder for schools across California to sustain essential programs and services. Despite budgeting and earlier reductions, RCSD has had to scale back student supports such as counseling and academic intervention. Without a stable local funding source, RCSD risks losing additional hands-on programs in science, mathematics, reading, and writing—programs that spark discovery and confidence in our students.

Superintendent's Message: September 2025: Helping Our Students Attend and Achieve

Chronic absenteeism means missing 10% or more of school days, and it adds up quickly—even when the absences are excused. Doctor’s appointments, family celebrations, and vacations all matter, but if they happen during the school day, they still count toward a student being chronically absent and thus lost instructional time.
