The Picture Perfect Home: Adelante Selby Student Wins Non-Profit Calendar Contest
Picture the perfect warm and safe home. Perhaps there’s a small yard for children to play and a little garden. An Adelante Selby fifth grader’s vivid sketch of such a place will be featured in a calendar supporting a non-profit, low-income housing organization.
Since 2001, HIP Housing of San Mateo’s Calendar Contest selects 13 drawings from local students to fill the brightly colored pages of a yearly calendar. Adelante Selby student Abigail’s drawing of a two-story home, dotted with flowers and a meandering path, is featured as the December 2024 submission for this year’s calendar contest.
Abigail and the other county-wide contest winners were honored at an event hosted by HIP Housing last month. The young artists were presented with an award and read aloud their own quotes written about the theme “What Home Means to Me.” Local and State community members and representatives such as Senator Josh Becker joined in the event to help honor the winners.
With the help of local sponsors, more than 3,000 of the dazzling, student-imagined calendars are to be distributed throughout the County.
The annual Calendar Contest brings attention to HIP Housing’s programs which work toward the goals of breaking the cycle of poverty and ending homelessness. HIP Housing offers housing and mentoring programs in San Mateo County, including the organization’s Self-Sufficiency Program and the Home Sharing Program.
