Stay Alert for School Operation Updates During Winter Weather

With winter weather already impacting Northern California, families and staff are encouraged to stay informed about potential changes to school operations due to heavy rain, strong winds, and other hazardous conditions. Redwood City School District (RCSD) is committed to student and staff safety and follows the Big 5 Safety Protocol to guide responses to various emergencies, including severe weather.

How the Big 5 Safety Protocol Applies to Winter Weather

The Big 5 Safety Protocol outlines the steps all San Mateo County schools and law enforcement agencies take in different situations. While often associated with emergencies such as intruders or earthquakes, these protocols also apply to weather-related events.

Shelter in Place:

Used when heavy rainfall, localized flooding, or poor air quality make it unsafe for students and staff to be outdoors. Schools will keep students indoors until conditions improve.

Secure Campus:

Implemented when weather conditions, such as strong winds causing falling debris or power outages, require limiting movement on campus. Outdoor activities may be suspended, and access to certain areas may be restricted.

Lockdown:

Though uncommon for weather events, this could be used in an extreme situation, such as sudden and dangerous storm conditions, that require everyone to remain indoors without movement.

Evacuation:

If a school experiences flooding, structural damage, or extended power loss, students and staff may be relocated to a safer area or an alternative site.

Drop, Cover, and Hold On:

Typically used during earthquakes, this protocol may also be applied in cases of severe storm conditions with high winds or falling debris.

How to Stay Informed About School Operations

Winter storms can sometimes lead to schedule changes, including delayed start times, early dismissals, or even school closures. RCSD will communicate updates through the following  channels:

  • Robocalls, emails, and text alerts
  • District and school websites

Families and staff should stay alert for any updates regarding school operations by ensuring their contact information is up to date for robocalls, email, and text alerts and regularly checking the district and school websites. In the event of severe weather, the district will communicate important information about potential schedule changes, including delayed starts, early dismissals, or closures. Being proactive and staying informed will help ensure student and staff safety and minimize disruptions during winter weather conditions.
