RCSD Launches Budget Renewal Initiative, Seeks Parents and Staff for Committee Participation

Redwood City School District (RCSD) is launching its Budget Renewal Initiative this fall, and parents, staff, and community members are encouraged to take an active role by applying to join the committee. This initiative aims to shape the district’s financial future as it transitions back to pre-pandemic operations, focusing on long-term financial stability while maintaining high-quality education for RCSD students.

The Budget Renewal Initiative prioritizes transparency, community engagement, and strategic planning. It comes at a critical time as one-time federal and state grants, which were vital in supporting all public schools during COVID-19 recovery efforts, are set to expire. With a second set of funds scheduled to end in 2026, the district is taking proactive steps to address future financial challenges.

Superintendent Dr. Baker emphasized the importance of diverse perspectives in this process, saying, “We want to ensure that all voices—especially those of our families and staff—are heard as we make these crucial budget decisions.”

The committee will include parents, district staff, and two Trustees, who will evaluate potential budget adjustments and make recommendations while studying community feedback. Applications to join the committee are now live on the district’s website. The district plans to appoint committee members shortly thereafter, with the following meeting schedule:

Committee Meeting #1: Thursday, October 10, 6-8 pm

Committee Meeting #2: Thursday, October 24, 6-8 pm

Board Study Session: Wednesday, October 30, 6 pm

Committee Meeting #3: Thursday, November 14, 6-8 pm

The initiative’s core objectives include:

Transparency: Ensuring stakeholders are well-informed about the budget process, rationale, and progress.

Community Engagement: Encouraging active participation from families and staff.

Support: Providing factual data and resources to help stakeholders understand the district’s financial context and decisions.

A dedicated section on the RCSD website will offer updates, meeting summaries, and opportunities for feedback, ensuring that families and staff remain informed and engaged throughout the process. Regular updates will also be shared to all families and staff.

The final budget proposal is expected to be presented at the December 11 Board meeting.

Superintendent's Message: September 2025: Helping Our Students Attend and Achieve

Chronic absenteeism means missing 10% or more of school days, and it adds up quickly—even when the absences are excused. Doctor’s appointments, family celebrations, and vacations all matter, but if they happen during the school day, they still count toward a student being chronically absent and thus lost instructional time.
