February Smiles: Bright Tips to Celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month
There’s plenty to smile about when thinking about ways to make dental health a little more fun for children. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month–a great reminder about the importance of practicing daily habits that lead to a healthier mouth.
As incoming kindergarten families get ready for the new school year, families need to turn in their child's Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment form (KOHA) by May 30. A California requirement, all kindergartners and first graders enrolling in public school for their first year must have an oral health screening completed by a licensed dental professional. The KOHA form, provided by the dentist, can be submitted at their child’s new school or the District Office.
The Oral Health Assessment is aimed at early detection of dental problems in young children. Taking care of “baby teeth” is an important step to long-term dental health as they are placeholders for a child's permanent teeth.
Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and getting regular checkups are just the start to a great routine. According to dental care and health professionals, eating balanced snacks such as fruit and vegetables, and limiting sugary drinks or foods can also promote good oral hygiene. Crunching on carrots, celery, apples and other fresh produce not only provides needed vitamins and minerals but can also help clean a tooth’s surface with their fibers.
Experts suggest spending two minutes during each brushing session, using circular motions with the brush, and brushing all surfaces including gums, teeth, and tongue. Parents and guardians should supervise young children until they can independently brush their teeth properly.
Bright Tips to encourage children to keep up with proper brushing are:
- Picking a two-minute song to brush to
- Making a game of it or setting a timer
- Using a sticker or reward chart to celebrate
- Selecting a colorful or character toothbrush
There are also apps, videos, and books that can help parents and caregivers explain to children the importance of daily brushing routines, eating healthy snacks, and about visiting the dentist.
