Draft Projects for Three Schools in Facilities Master Plan Unveiled

Redwood City School District (RCSD) has reached a key milestone in the development of its Facilities Master Plan, the foundation for Phase II of the district’s modernization and construction program funded by Measure S. Approved by voters in 2022, Measure S is dedicated to ensuring safe, modern, and sustainable school facilities.

At the recent School Board meeting, the first drafts of projects for Henry Ford Elementary School, McKinley Institute of Technology (MIT), and Taft Community School were presented. These drafts were created with significant input from the community, highlighting RCSD’s commitment to an inclusive planning process. Opportunities for further community engagement are scheduled in the coming months to refine the proposals and gather additional feedback.

A Collaborative Process for Comprehensive Planning

The Facilities Master Plan process began over the summer with information gathering and has entered the planning and design phase, which runs through January. Committee meetings are being held at schools to ensure that the diverse needs of students, staff, families, and friends and neighbors are reflected in the final plans. Master Plan Committees, composed of staff, students, parents, and community members, have played an essential role in shaping the draft projects.

Upcoming districtwide community forums will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to review site-specific plans, share feedback, and ask questions. These meetings are scheduled to take place in late January, following the completion of the second round of school committee meetings.

Quick-Start and Long-Term Priorities

While the master planning process continues, the district has identified quick-start priorities, such as updating HVAC systems and retrofitting lighting, to address immediate needs. High-priority projects for Measure S also include:

  • Building new classrooms for transitional kindergarten
  • Modernizing student services staff spaces and creating family resource centers
  • Providing dedicated physical education spaces
  • Replacing portable classrooms with permanent structures

Next Steps

In the winter and early spring, the district will refine project drafts, develop cost estimates, and gather public comments. Final approval of the Facilities Master Plan is expected later in the spring.

The Facilities Master Plan represents RCSD’s mission to enhance student learning by providing safe, inspiring, and modernized environments.

Superintendent Dr. Baker emphasized,

“These updates reflect our community’s shared vision for schools that meet the needs of all learners and ensure a bright future for every child.”

The RCSD community soon will have additional opportunities to provide feedback and participate in shaping the future of RCSD’s schools.
