County Educators Root for the Mustangs' Sustainability Creations

A stroll through the expansive garden at Henry Ford Elementary makes it clear there is something special flourishing on school grounds. Students are stewards of this growing space and the sense of pride is palpable.

The garden program, outdoor learning space, and related weekly environmental lessons were recently lauded by San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) through its Sustainable and Climate Resilient Schools Challenge. Henry Ford was one of 22 standout award recipients from across San Mateo County for the 2022-23 school year.

Recognized in the categories of Food Systems, Green Buildings & Grounds, and Land-Based Ecosystems, Henry Ford students, staff, families, and community members have been dedicated to developing an area that cultivates a close connection to the land.

Students develop skills in sustainable gardening, responsible resource management, and environmental responsibility. Many students also participate in efforts to collect compost through the “Green Team” lunch program. More than 30 native trees have been planted and teachers receive ongoing support opportunities related to environmental education.
