A Year Ahead: District is Set for Major HVAC Upgrades in Summer 2026

Redwood City School District (RCSD) will move forward with permanent air conditioning upgrades at three more schools next summer, continuing its effort toward ensuring cool, safe classrooms for students and staff.

At its June 25, 2025 meeting, the Board of Trustees approved plans for Phase II of the district’s HVAC upgrade project. Clifford, Kennedy, and Orion Alternative schools will receive new permanent HVAC systems, with construction scheduled for summer 2026.

This next phase follows earlier approvals for HVAC work at Adelante Selby, Hoover, Roosevelt, and Taft Schools, where installation of permanent systems is taking place during summer 2025.

In the meantime, more than 300 classrooms across the district are using portable air conditioning units, purchased as a temporary solution until full upgrades can be completed.

“These improvements are about more than comfort—they’re about safety,” said Board President Mike Wells.

The HVAC work is part of a larger commitment the Board made at the start of the 2024–25 school year to prioritize air quality and classroom conditions. The upgrades are funded by Measure S, a school bond overwhelmingly supported by local voters.

“We are deeply grateful to the voters of Redwood City for making these investments possible,” said Superintendent Dr. John Baker.

The total cost of Phase II is estimated at $21.25 million, including construction costs and associated expenses such as design, permitting, and project management. The work will modernize existing buildings and avoid demolition, allowing for a more efficient and cost-effective approach.

Planning and design will begin immediately, with the district issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) summer of 2025 to secure architectural services. Early action is intended to reduce potential delays in state approvals and supply chain challenges.

These efforts represent an important step forward in making sure all Redwood City schools have safe, modern learning environments that support the health and well-being of students and staff.
