November 2024 MIT Modernization and Construction Update

The District Facilities Master Planning Committee recently held its first meeting to receive input from the McKinley School Site Committee. During this meeting, several key topics were discussed, including but not limited to:

  • The need for air conditioning in classrooms.
  • Improving the safety of the drop-off and improving the flow of traffic during drop-off and pick-up. Improving wayfinding, fencing and signage for the front entrance.
  • Classroom and gymnasium modernization including new flooring, casework and finishes.
  • Improving elective classroom spaces; dedicated art room, home economics room, and improving acoustics for the band room to prevent sound pollution to the other classrooms.
  • Improving the speed line for lunch service and adding a window to expedite lunch service.
  • Relocating the office to be closer to the family center. More meeting space for staff and office space for support staff. Campus security at the library.
  • Adding water fountains and bottle filling stations.

The district facilities master planning committee reviewed all the feedback received and created potential solutions to enhance the campus and address the needs expressed by the school site committee. Several opportunities to improve the campus were identified such as:

  • Creating a new dining quad, student quad, and outdoor classrooms.
  • Partially demolishing Building A and constructing a new 1-story building for locker rooms, PE classrooms, and a music room.
  • Demolishing Buildings B, C, and D to build a new 2-story building for administration, student support, the family center, library/media center, science labs, and elective classrooms.
  • Reconfiguring Rooms 113 and 115 into a new front entrance.
  • Developing a new promenade, parking area, drop-off zone, and curbside drop-off.
  • Expanding Building H.

A follow-up meeting was held to review these potential solutions, prioritize the campus needs, and gather additional feedback from the committee. The committee identified air conditioning, classroom modernization, reconfiguring the front entry/office, and constructing a new administration/library/science building as the top priorities.
