Lighting Upgrades Across Our Schools

As part of the District’s Energy Efficiency Project, lighting throughout our facilities is being replaced and upgraded. These new fixtures are designed to be more energy-efficient and may adjust automatically based on daylight and room usage. As a result, lighting may appear brighter, dimmer, or change unexpectedly at times. In some areas, traditional wall switches have been replaced with motion and/or sound sensors, or removed entirely, to help reduce energy use.

What to Expect After Lighting Is Replaced

  • Many new lights are controlled by motion (and sometimes sound) sensors—please do not turn off the switches.

  • If a switch is turned off, the motion sensors will not be able to turn the lights back on.

  • If lights do not turn on when you enter a space, it is likely the previous occupant used the switch.

  • If lights remain on for up to an hour after a space is vacated, it may be due to background noise (such as HVAC systems or aquariums).

  • Any remaining work may be marked with blue tape; however, all outstanding items are logged and will be completed even if not marked.

  • Before reporting lighting concerns, please review the information above.

  • If a fixture is clearly malfunctioning, notify Site or Facilities leadership so it can be addressed.

  • Exterior lighting that is not functioning should be reported immediately. Please note that in some locations, exterior lighting power has been disconnected due to prior projects or neighbor concerns.

How You Can Help

  • Do not use light switches when leaving a space, unless it is a mechanical room with manual controls.

  • Report any malfunctioning fixtures or exterior lights that are not on at night.

  • Ensure custodial closet ceilings are accessible by ladder.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work to make our schools more energy-efficient.

McKinley Institute of Technology is receiving lighting upgrades as part of RCSD’s Energy Efficiency Project. New energy-efficient fixtures use motion and sound sensors to automatically adjust based on daylight and room use, which may cause lighting to change throughout the day. These upgrades help reduce energy use across campuses, and staff and families can support the system by following updated guidance on how the new lighting operates.
