Lighting Upgrades Across Our Schools

As part of the District’s Energy Efficiency Project, lighting across our campuses has been upgraded to more energy-efficient systems. These new fixtures are designed to adjust automatically based on daylight and room use—helping us reduce energy consumption while keeping spaces well-lit for learning.

In many areas, traditional wall switches have been replaced with motion and/or sound sensors (yes, the lights are now smarter than they used to be). In some cases, switches may still be present—but they’re no longer meant for everyday use.

What to Expect Now That the Project Is Complete

  • Many lights are controlled by motion (and sometimes sound) sensors—please do not turn off wall switches.
  • If a switch is turned off, the sensors won’t be able to turn the lights back on (and no one enjoys teaching or learning in the dark).
  • If lights don’t turn on when you enter a room, it’s likely the previous occupant turned the switch off.
  • Lights may stay on for up to an hour after a room is empty due to background noise (HVAC systems, aquariums, or the occasional enthusiastic classroom activity).
  • Before reporting a lighting issue, please check the items above.
  • If a fixture is clearly malfunctioning, please notify Site or Facilities leadership.
  • Exterior lights that are not functioning should be reported promptly.
    • Note: In some locations, exterior lighting may have been intentionally disconnected due to prior projects or neighborhood considerations.

How You Can Help

  • Please do not turn off light switches when leaving a room (unless it’s a mechanical room with manual controls).
  • Report any lights that are not working properly—especially exterior lights at night.
  • Help keep custodial closet ceilings accessible for maintenance (ladders need a little breathing room too).

Thank you for your support as we make our schools more energy-efficient, sustainable, and just a little bit smarter—one light at a time.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work to make our schools more energy-efficient.
