November 2024 Adelante Selby Modernization and Construction Update

The District Facilities Master Planning Committee recently held its first meeting to receive input from the Adelante Selby School Site Committee. During this meeting, several key topics were discussed, including but not limited to: 

  • The need for air conditioning in classrooms.
  • The necessity for dedicated restrooms in TK and Kindergarten classrooms.
  • Installation of drinking fountains and water bottle filling stations.
  • General modernization of classrooms.
  • Upgrading outdated technology.
  • Adding lighting in the front of the school, parking lot, and corridors.
  • Improving drainage on the field and playground.
  • Adding outdoor covered areas for shade.
  • Addressing noise issues between classrooms.

The district facilities master planning committee is reviewing all the feedback received and working on potential solutions to enhance the campus and address the needs expressed by the school site committee.

A follow-up meeting is scheduled for December 11, where the committee will review these proposed solutions, prioritize campus needs, and gather additional feedback.

Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School is receiving lighting upgrades as part of Redwood City School District’s energy efficiency project. New energy-saving fixtures use motion and sound sensors, which may cause lights to adjust automatically throughout the day. These upgrades support reduced energy use across schools, and staff and families can help by following updated guidance on how the new lighting system works.

At the November 20, 2024 Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees approved an Energy Services Agreement to upgrade lighting systems across the District. Adelante Selby School is currently underway. This summer, the Bond Program Team also has been hard at work upgrading HVAC systems at Adelante Selby.

Construction Plans

During the October 16 Board Study Session, the Board of Trustees presented three conceptual scenarios outlining possible approaches for implementing Measure S projects identified in the Facilities Master Plan (FMP).

HVAC System

The Board of Trustees approved multiple initiatives aimed at improving climate control in local schools. These measures are part of ongoing efforts to optimize learning conditions for students across the district, a priority identified early last fall.

HVAC System

The first phase of installations will begin this summer at Adelante Selby, Hoover, Roosevelt, and Taft, as these schools require fewer structural and electrical modifications. The remaining campuses will receive upgrades in subsequent phases until every school is equipped with a modern HVAC system.

Audit Documents

The performance audit revealed a positive assessment of the district's management, with no significant problems or disagreements identified. Spending on bond projects was found to align with what voters approved, ensuring accountability and transparency. Additionally, the audit confirmed that payroll and procurement procedures adhere to legal requirements, and no significant accounting issues or unreported financial problems were discovered. Overall, the audit concluded that the bond funds are well-managed and used appropriately.
