Meet the Superintendent

Dr. John Baker, Ed.D., is an educator who has devoted his life to the field of education, leaving an indelible mark on the Redwood City School District (RCSD) and the communities it serves.
Born in Oakland, California, his journey in education began with a unique childhood marked by constant relocation due to his father’s service in the Air Force and subsequent career as a corporate attorney. This early exposure to diverse environments undoubtedly contributed to Dr. Baker’s commitment to multicultural education.
While Dr. Baker initially pursued a career in political science, inspired by his father’s footsteps as an attorney, his path took an unexpected turn. It was during his college years at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) that he discovered his true calling. Tutoring students in East Los Angeles, as part of community service requirements at UCLA, revealed to him the pressing need for educators who could make a difference in the lives of young learners. Driven by this realization, he switched his major to early childhood education and Spanish, recognizing the potential to impact students’ lives in a profound way.
After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA, Dr. Baker’s journey continued with a Master’s degree from Stanford University, and a Doctorate of Education from the University of San Francisco.

One of Dr. Baker’s proudest moments was when a student he had guided came forward to announce their acceptance into college. This student was the first in their family to graduate from high school and pursue a degree in engineering, a testament to Dr. Baker's transformative impact on individual lives.
His dedication to the well-being of students and the enhancement of the education system motivated him to transition into leadership roles. He served as an assistant principal at the then Selby Lane School and eventually ascended to the position of principal at both Selby Lane and Hoover schools.
Dr. Baker’s ascent within the Redwood City School District continued as he took on pivotal roles at the District Office, where he served as director, assistant superintendent, and deputy superintendent. His visionary leadership, collaborative approach, and unwavering dedication to student success were increasingly recognized, culminating in his appointment as Superintendent in 2015.
