San Mateo County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA)
In California, a SELPA, or Special Education Local Plan Area, is a regional consortium of school districts, charter schools, and County Offices of Education. SELPAs collaborate to ensure that all students with special needs receive appropriate educational services within their geographic region. This framework promotes local control and accountability.
Redwood City School District (RCSD) is part of the San Mateo County SELPA, a collaborative effort among local education agencies (LEAs). Together, RCSD and the San Mateo County SELPA, focus on early intervention and prevention of disabilities, aiming to deliver high-quality special education programs and services effectively.
SELPAs enable LEAs, such as RCSD, to coordinate and deliver specialized educational services, ensuring that programs are accessible to all students with disabilities in the region. A SELPA plan is in place to guarantee that every student with disabilities receives a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment.
