Elementary Music

Music and sound are all around us–in our footsteps, in the call of a bird, and in the harmony of children laughing together. The RCSD Elementary Music program seeks to help students understand the fundamentals of music by introducing even our youngest children to the building blocks of music such as rhythm, melody, harmony, and tempo. These elements make sound come to life in a way that moves us–sparking curiosity, creativity, and emotion.

With a keen focus on understanding musical concepts, students also learn the artistic process and interpretation of music. Our program embraces music and movement as essential parts of a well-rounded education and is rooted in the California Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) standards adopted by the State in 2019. This framework empowers students to engage with music in ways that are inclusive, reflective, and culturally responsive.

Through hands-on activities, games, and instrument use, students explore the world of music and instruments in a joyful environment. Students can investigate and create music while making connections to personal and cultural experiences, discovering not only how to make meaningful sound but why it matters as they tap into a universal language.
