Meet Dr. Rubalcaba

Dr. Christian J. Rubalcaba grew up in public schools and knows firsthand how powerful a caring teacher and a supportive school community can be. As a student, he was fortunate to have a safe haven in the schools he attended with truly caring, empathetic teachers who believed in him and who always went above and beyond to ensure his success. Those early experiences shaped his belief that every child deserves to feel seen, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential.

Today, Dr. Rubalcaba is a lifelong educator who has spent his career working in public schools across the Bay Area. He began as a bilingual classroom teacher, supporting students and families who speak multiple languages. From there, he became an instructional coach, helping teachers strengthen their practice, and later served as a school principal at both the elementary and middle school levels. These roles gave him a deep understanding of what happens inside classrooms and on school campuses every day.

Dr. Rubalcaba has also held senior district leadership roles, where he helped improve student services, expand community schools, strengthen mental health supports, and build stronger partnerships with families. Throughout his career, his focus has stayed the same: making sure schools work well for all students to increase academic achievement levels.

As he prepares to join RCSD, Dr. Rubalcaba is committed to building on what is already working, listening closely to students, families, and staff, and working together to create schools where everyone feels welcome and valued.

In His Own Words

To help our community get to know him better, we asked Dr. Rubalcaba a few questions about his background, leadership, and what excites him most about joining RCSD. Below, he shares his reflections in his own words.

What Drew you to Redwood City School District?

Redwood City School District has a deep sense of heart and community. I was drawn to the district’s commitment to students, its pride in diversity, and the way families, educators, and schools show up for one another. There is a strong belief here that every child matters, and this resonated deeply with me.

How did your own experience growing up in public schools shape who you are as an educator today?

Public schools opened doors for me. I learned early on that schools can be places of belonging, possibility, and transformation when adults believe in students and invest in them. That experience shaped my commitment to equity, opportunity, and ensuring every student feels seen and supported.

How would you describe your leadership style to families and staff?

I lead with listening, collaboration, and care. I believe in being present, building trust, and making decisions rooted in what is best for students. I value transparency, shared leadership, and learning alongside others.

What do you believe every student deserves from their school experience?

Every student deserves to feel safe, valued, challenged, and inspired. They deserve joyful learning environments, caring relationships, and opportunities to discover their strengths and dreams. They also deserve an education where they feel academically ready for their next step on their academic journey.

How do you see families as partners in student success?

Families are our most important partners. Their voices, cultures, and lived experiences strengthen our schools. When we work together with trust and respect, students thrive.

How do you plan to spend your first few months in RCSD?

I plan to listen, learn, and connect. I want to visit schools, meet students, staff, and families, and understand what makes RCSD special. Building relationships will be my top priority.

What are you most excited to learn as you get to know this community?

I’m excited to learn the stories—what families value, what students are proud of, and what educators are passionate about. Those stories will guide our work moving forward.

What gives you hope about the future of public education?

The people. Every day, I see educators, families, and students showing resilience, creativity, and heart. That collective commitment to children and community gives me great hope for what’s ahead.
