RCSD Accepting Applications for Area III Trustee

Redwood City School District (RCSD) is seeking qualified candidates to fill the Trustee Area III seat on its Board of Trustees, which will be vacant this winter. The application process for this position opens on Friday, August 30, and will close on Monday, September 30, at 5:00 pm.

Due to the absence of candidates for Trustee Area III, the Board of Trustees is required to appoint a new trustee before the upcoming election on November 5. This appointment process is essential to ensure that the district can continue to effectively govern and support its schools.

The RCSD Board is committed to a transparent and inclusive selection process and encourages community members who are passionate about education to apply.

  • At least 18-years old

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and registered to vote

  • Cannot be an RCSD employee and serve on the Board at the same time

  • Any resident within Area III (current RCSD parent or community member)

Application and Interview Process:

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications by the deadline. Applicants should be aware that answers to the questions may be made available publicly.

After the application period closes, the current RCSD Board of Trustees will hold a public meeting on October 9 to interview the candidates. These interviews will provide an opportunity for the public to hear from the candidates and for the Board to assess their qualifications.

The appointee will officially take their Area III Trustee seat during the Tuesday, December 17, Board meeting.

Need for Appointing a Trustee

According to Education Code 5326 and 5328, if the district does not receive enough candidates to fill all vacant trustee positions by 83 days before the election (August 14), an election for the positions will not be held. In such cases, the Board is responsible for making appointments to fill the anticipated vacancies. These appointments must be made before Election Day to avoid the potential need for a costly special election.

Current Vacancies and Upcoming Election:

This fall, three seats on the RCSD Board of Trustees are up for election: Trustee Areas I, III, and IV. Incumbent Trustee Mike Wells is running for re-election in Area IV and Candidate Jennifer Ng Kwing King is running for Trustee Area I. No candidate had filed paperwork for Trustee Area III by the close of the filing period, which means the Trustee Area III seat will be vacated this winter.

The Board is actively seeking qualified individuals to fill this seat to ensure continued representation for the community.

The Role of a School Board Trustee:

The Board of Trustees is responsible for setting policies, overseeing the school district’s budget and ensuring financial accountability, and developing long-term strategic plans (LCAP) to align with community educational goals. Trustees also ensure that the district is effectively governed and operates in accordance with state laws and regulations.

To accomplish their duties, Trustees participate in a number of meetings and events such as Regular Board meetings, which are typically held the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month, with occasional special meetings. In addition to preparing for and attending Board meetings, some personal time is necessary for individual study and growth, such as attending regional meetings, training, and conferences. Board members may also attend special events such as graduations, holiday celebrations, and ribbon cutting events in their role as a Trustee.
