Board of Trustees Study Session

1.    Call to Order

President Lawson called the Study Session to order at 6:00 p.m. 

1.1    Roll Call

Present at the Study Session meeting: President Janet Lawson, Vice-President Mike Wells; Trustees Alisa MacAvoy, David Weekly, and Cecilia Márquez; and Superintendent Baker

Others present during the Study Session meeting: Assistant Superintendent Anna Herrera, Deputy Superintendent Wendy Kelly, CBO Rick Edson, and others.

2.    Welcome

President Lawson welcomed those present. 

3.    Changes to the Agenda

None.

4.      Approval of the Agenda

The School Board approved the agenda as submitted (Wells, Weekly; 5-0).

5.    Oral Communication

Laura Ramirez, a parent of the Redwood City School District, made awareness of the help and support she has received from Familias Unidas and wanted to ensure more parents knew about the program.

President Lawson called on Maria Saban to speak but no response was received.

6.    Discussion Items

6.1    Update on Budget Renewal Initiative

Superintendent Baker, along with Assistant Superintendent Anna Herrera, Deputy Superintendent Wendy Kelly, and CBO Rick Edson, provided the School Board with an update on recent survey results and Budget Renewal Initiative Committee meetings progress related to the Budget Renewal Initiative.

Public Comments:

Jessica Shade addressed the School Board to create awareness of a citizens’ initiative for a parcel tax.

President Lawson called on Alison Oldford to speak but no response was received.

Julia Robinson, a mental health counselor at Roy Cloud, addressed the School Board to inquire about the measures being taken to try to defer the cost of the mental health counseling program.

Key Points Discussed by the Board of Trustees:

•    Consolidation of school districts
•    Enrollment-based position reductions
•    Community Ideas for Reductions
•    Community Ideas for Generating Revenue

Final recommendations from the Superintendent to the Board of Trustees regarding the budget renewal initiatives are expected to be brought forward at the Dec 11th Board meeting.

The School Board adjourned the meeting at 8:06 p.m. (Weekly, Wells; 5-0).
