REGULAR BOARD MEETING

1.         Call to Order

President Márquez called the Closed Session to order at 5:53 p.m.

 

1.1           Roll Call

Present at the Closed Board meeting: President Cecilia Márquez, Vice-President Janet Lawson; Trustees Mike Wells, Alisa MacAvoy, and David Weekly; and Superintendent Baker

 

Others present during the Closed Board meeting: CBO Rick Edson, Peter Ingram, and Clarissa Canady

The School Board reconvened for the regular session at 7:00 p.m.

President Márquez welcomed those present.

 

The board meeting was paused at 7:01 due to technical issues and resumed at 7:08 p.m.

The School Board approved the agenda as submitted (Lawson, Wells; 5-0).

11.       School/Community Reports

 

11.1     2023-24 Student Enrollment Update

Jorge Quintana, Director of Communications, introduced the Department of Enrollment Services team members. Moreover, he gave an update on the enrollment process, the improvement efforts, and enrollment numbers for the 2023-24 school year.

 

Trustee MacAvoy requested clarification about the TK waitlist and inquired whether it appeared that enrollment numbers for October 2023 would closely mirror those of the previous year.

 

Trustee Wells inquired about the direction of the School Board when considering enrollment, to which Superintendent Baker responded. Superintendent Baker recommended avoiding combination classes.

 

Trustee Weekly suggested looking into why students leave or join the school district.

 

The Trustees and Superintendent Baker thanked Jorge for the presentation and for his work. They also thanked the Department of Enrollment team members for their work.

The School Board members and Dr. Baker discussed the school assignments and committee assignments for the Board members.

15.1     Report from Board Members and Superintendent

Vice-President Lawson reported attending a Workforce Housing Committee meeting.

 

Trustee Wells reported attending a Chamber Education Committee meeting.

 

Trustee MacAvoy reported attending a Safe Routes to Schools meeting. She informed the School Board that San Mateo and South City Councils have chosen to reduce speed limits near school zones. She suggested that there be advocacy from the school sites to implement that change in Redwood City as well. She also attended a Fentanyl Crisis webinar.

 

Trusty Weekly reported attending Back to School Night.

 

President Márquez reported attending the San Mateo Parks Foundation Celebration. She also reminded the School Board about the first Latino Heritage speaker, Silvia Mendez.

 

Superintendent Baker reported attending a Dyslexia presentation at the Redwood Shores Library.

 

16.       Information

 

16.1     2023-24 Adopted Budget & LCAP for Connect Community Charter School and RCSD's Fiscal Oversight Review Letter

Trustee MacAvoy noted that some of the projections were higher than the actual enrollment.

 

Trustee Wells noted there were some inconsistencies.

 

16.2     2023-24 Adopted Budget & LCAP for Rocketship Redwood City and RCSD's Fiscal Oversight Review Letter

17.       Correspondence

Vice-President Lawson reported receiving parent correspondence regarding school photo pricing, and an email from a Kennedy parent praising Chandra Leonardo on her new role as the principal.

 

Trustee Weekly received a request from a parent to obtain information about the phonics assessment conducted for 1st graders and to receive the I-Ready data right after the assessment is completed, rather than waiting for the report cards to be issued.

 

18.       Other Business/Suggested Items for Future Agenda

Trustee MacAvoy requested adding a discussion on dyslexia.

 

Trustee Weekly expressed interest in convening a group to explore discussions regarding the future of the Orion campus.

Upon Superintendent Baker’s request, the School Board agreed to change the January 24th board meeting to January 17th.
