REGULAR BOARD MEETING

1.         Call to Order

President Márquez called the Regular meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

 

1.1           Roll Call

Present at the Regular Board meeting: President Cecilia Márquez, Vice-President Janet Lawson; Trustees Mike Wells, Alisa MacAvoy, and David Weekly; and Superintendent Baker

 

Others present during the Regular Board meeting: CBO Rick Edson, Deputy Superintendent Wendy Kelly, Assistant Superintendent Anna Herrera, Itzel Gloria, Nora Abou Ortiz, Melissa Bowdoin, Warren Sedar, Patricia Alcocer, Jose Luna, Will Robertson, and others.

President Márquez welcomed those present.

4.      Approval of the Agenda

 

The School Board approved the agenda as submitted (Wells, MacAvoy; 5-0).

6.         Bond Program Action Items

 

6.1       Recommendation re: Discussion and Approval of Final Projects List

 

Will Robertson presented to the School Board a list of potential final projects for Measure T. He noted there is approximately $800,000 remaining in the board reserve.

 

The School Board discussed and approved the McKinley Theater Lighting Technology Upgrades project, and requested more thorough research on the Solar Project and a quote for the Tether Ball project at Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion (MacAvoy, Lawson; 5-0).

7.         School/Community Reports

 

7.1       Adelante Selby and Roy Cloud School Presentations for the 2023-2024 School Year

 

Adelante Selby and Roy Cloud school administrators showcased how they are addressing the implementation of new academic initiatives, exemplifying student voice and parent engagement, and organizing school events. These efforts are aligned with their site LCAP goals and SPSA plans.

 

The Trustees and Superintendent Baker thanked Warren, Patricia, Jose Luna, and all the teachers and staff at Adelante Selby, and Melissa and all the teachers and staff at Roy Cloud for their dedication and commitment. They expressed their gratitude for all the work they do.

 

Vice-President Lawson inquired about the demand to enroll at Adelante Selby to which Warren responded that demand remains high.

 

The Trustees expressed that they would also like to hear from the schools what challenges they face and what schools need from the School Board. They would like to have these topics included in future school presentations.

 

Superintendent Baker congratulated Warren on meeting all of his goals and improved student test scores.

 

Superintendent Baker read out loud an email he received from a parent that praised Melissa’s character.

9.1       Recommendation re:  Approval of the 2023-24 Federal Addendum to the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP)

 

Katherine Rivera, Director of ELD and Categorical Services, noted that due to the reduction in the number of RCSD students who qualify for Title 1 resources, there are fewer overall resources across the district.

10.       Board and Superintendent Reports

 

10.1     Report from Board Members and Superintendent

 

Trustee Wells reported attending a Bond Team meeting.

 

Trustee Weekly reported completing the online ethics training. He also reported attending a 1st-grade and 3rd-grade goal-setting conference.

 

Trustee MacAvoy reported attending a Wellness Committee meeting with Vice-President Lawson. She also reported attending the Sequoia Hospital Advisory Committee meeting and a Workforce Housing Committee meeting. Additionally, she reported that she attended the CSBA Roadshow with President Márquez and Superintendent Baker. Lastly, she met with a community member to speak about dyslexia.

 

Vice-President Lawson reported attending the Bond Team meeting, the Wellness Committee meeting, and the Workforce Housing meeting. Lastly, she reported attending her son’s goal-setting conference.

 

President Márquez reported attending a Redwood City Together Committee meeting with Trustee MacAvoy, and the last Hispanic Heritage Speaker Series which was a panel of high school students. Lastly, she reported attending McKinley’s Zumba-thon.

 

Superintendent Baker reported attending the Redwood City Together Committee meeting, and the Bond Team meeting. He also reminded the School Board about the Study Session happening on November 2, 2023, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Hoover Gym.

Trustee MacAvoy reported being in correspondence with a community member who has concerns regarding unhoused individuals and encampments near Hoover.

 

President Márquez reported receiving correspondence from a parent expressing concern over the super minimum days.
