President Lawson and Trustee Weekly commented on slide 15, 'Building Relationships between School Staff and Families,' and discussed the parent engagement data and parent participation. President Lawson and Assistant Superintendent Anna Herrera noted that the Panorama survey questions can be very limited, making it challenging to gather effective information.
Trustee Weekly highlighted concerns from the Panorama data regarding middle school student's perceptions of the school environment. He noted that while middle school is developmentally challenging, the negative experiences reported by students are unusually high. Trustee Weekly suggested forming a task force comprising students, parents, and teachers to investigate the issues and develop concrete actions to improve the middle school experience. Assistant Superintendent Anna Herrera addressed Weekly’s concerns.
Trustee Márquez recounted her personal experience when her children were in middle school, noting that she did not hear of any violence occurring, and her kids never mentioned it.
President Lawson noted that the answer to the question depends on how each individual parent interprets the questions.
Vice President Wells praised Ms. Herrera for the presentation.
President Lawson praised Jenny Tran for putting together the presentation.
Superintendent Baker emphasized the importance of highlighting the positive aspects of middle schools to alter parents' negative perceptions of them. Superintendent Baker also suggested the idea of creating their own survey to gather helpful information.
