REGULAR BOARD MEETING

1.         Call to Order

President Márquez called the Closed Session to order at 6:00 p.m.

 

1.1       Roll Call

Present at the Closed Board meeting: President Cecilia Márquez, Vice-President Janet Lawson; Trustees Mike Wells and Alisa MacAvoy; and Superintendent Baker

 

Others present during the Closed Board meeting: CBO Rick Edson, Peter Ingram, and Clarissa Canady

3.1       CONFERENCE WITH REAL PROPERTY NEGOTIATORS (Gov. Code, § 54956.8) Property: 750 Bradford St, Redwood City, CA 94063 Agency negotiators: John Baker, Superintendent, Peter Ingram, Consultant, and Clarissa Canady, Legal Counsel, Negotiating parties: Redwood City School District and The Sobrato Organization Under negotiation: Price and terms of payment of Property Exchange Agreement

Trustee Weekly officially arrived to the meeting.

 

4.         Reconvene to Regular Session at Approximately 7:00 PM

The School Board reconvened for the Regular Session at 7:09 p.m.

 

4.1       Roll Call

Present during the Regular session: President Cecilia Márquez, Vice-President Janet Lawson; Trustees Mike Wells, Alisa MacAvoy, and David Weekly; and Superintendent Baker.

4.2       Report Out on Closed Session from June 14, 2023

The School Board received information from the workforce housing consultant. The School Board will receive further information at the June 28th closed-session board meeting.

Trustee MacAvoy requested to move action item 13.2 to consent.

 

President Márquez requested to move consent item 12.13 to action.

11.       Discussion Items

 

11.1     Discussion of the Board Meeting Calendar for the 2023-24 School Year

The School Board and Superintendent Baker reviewed and discussed the proposed calendar of board meeting dates for the 2023-24 school year.

 

11.2     Reading Instruction

Assistant Superintendent Liz Wolfe presented the School Board with a PowerPoint presentation that informed the School Board on the science of reading, training, curriculum for staff, and future plans to improve student reading skills.

 

The School Board and Superintendent Baker expressed their gratitude for the information provided and acknowledged the dedicated efforts being made to enhance students' reading skills. The School Board also had an opportunity to ask clarifying questions regarding reading instruction.

 

Speaker’s card:

 

Giselle Hale, former mayor and parent to a rising 1st-grade student, spoke in support of the transition in literacy approach. Giselle also shared comments regarding dyslexia screenings and encourages the trustees to learn more regarding the subject to better meet student needs.

12.13   Recommendation re:  Approval of PowerSchool 5-year Agreement from 2023-28

CBO Rick Edson clarified questions regarding the financial impact of the agreement and

other questions the trustees had.

 

The School Board approved the PowerSchool 5-year Agreement from 2023-28 (Márquez, MacAvoy; 5-0).

The School Board adopted Resolution 37, Approval of Education Code Options for Teaching Assignments 2023-2024 School Year (MacAvoy, Weekly; 5-0). The Education Code Options for Teaching Assignments were approved for the following teachers:

13.3     Recommendation re: Approval of Disbursement of Measure U Funds for the 2023-24 School Year

Trustee MacAvoy expressed her appreciation to the community for passing Measure U which provides funding for essential educational items.

 

The School Board approved the disbursement of Measure U funds for the 2023-24 school year (MacAvoy, Weekly; 5-0).

14.       Board and Superintendent Reports

 

14.1     Report from Board Members and Superintendent

Trustee Wells reported attending a few graduations, the LCAP Committee meeting, the retirement reception, a bond team meeting, and a meeting with Trustee Weekly, Jenny Tran, and Liz Wolfe to go over data.

 

Trustee Weekly reported attending the LCAP Committee meeting, a data meeting with Liz Wolfe and Jenny Tran, and the Garfield and Hoover graduations.

 

Trustee MacAvoy reported spending a few days reviewing about 75 annual education conference workshop proposals. She also attended a Workforce Housing Committee meeting, the retirement reception, and the Roosevelt, Taft, Roy Cloud, and Clifford promotions/graduations. Lastly, she reported attending a Wellness Committee meeting where they reviewed an end-of-year report.

 

Vice-President Lawson reported attending the McKinley, Henry Ford, and Adelante-Selby promotions/graduations. She also mentioned attending the district music concert, where Trustee Wells was also present.

 

President Márquez reported attending the Kennedy graduation.

 

Superintendent Baker reported attending a few graduations and promotions. He also met with Dr. Balster, from Kaiser, to discuss the collaboration between RCSD and Kaiser for the well-being center.

 

15.       Correspondence

Trustee Weekly reported receiving correspondence from a parent who requested to have the HVAC at the former Orion building to be turned off during the summer to avoid making noise.
