APPROVED MINUTES OF BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

August 29, 2018

  1. Call to Order

President Díaz-Slocum called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. at the District Office, Redwood City School District (“RCSD”), 750 Bradford Street, Redwood City.

Present at the Board Meeting: President María Díaz-Slocum, Vice-President Dennis McBride, Janet Lawson, Alisa MacAvoy, Hilary Paulson and Superintendent John Baker.

Others Present: Linda Montes, Wendy Kelly, Priscilla Aquino-Dichoso, Dave Paliughi, Antonio Pérez, Leslie Stafford, Will Robertson.

  1. Welcome

President Díaz-Slocum welcomed those present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Trustee Paulson requested Action Items 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.7, 8.8, 8.9 be moved to Consent.

The board approved the agenda as amended, (Lawson, McBride; 5-0)

  1. School/Community Reports

6.1 Bond Program Update

Will Robertson, Program Manager for RGM Associates, provided the School Board and Superintendent Baker with an update of the Bond Program projects.

6.2 Professional Development for 2018-2019

Executive Director of Educational Services Linda Montes and Executive Director of Human Resources & Educational Services 6-8 Wendy Kelly provided the School Board and Superintendent Baker with a presentation where they were informed that the focus of professional development was on the social emotional and academic success of all learners. Administrators, teachers, and classified staff learned information about trauma informed classroom practices, human trafficking issues, implications of instruction with the new English Learner Performance Assessment of California, content specific pedagogy and writing across content areas.

Furthermore, Superintendent Baker added that each principal would be released two days a month to provide coaching for teachers and lead data analysis meetings.

The School Board thanked Linda Montes, Wendy Kelly and Superintendent Baker for all of their work throughout the professional development sessions.

6.3 Presentation of Beginning Teacher Support & Assessment Program (BTSA)/Induction

Executive Director of Human Resources & Educational Services 6-8 Wendy Kelly provided the School Board with an overview of the objectives of the BTSA program. In addition, Ms. Kelly added that there are currently 32 teachers participating in the RCSD General Education BTSA/Induction Credentialing Program and 24 teachers were recommended by site administration to serve as teacher support providers. Ms. Kelly commented that the BTSA program provides ongoing training and support for mentors that include, coaching, goal setting, and best practices in adult learning.

The School Board and Superintendent Baker thanked Wendy Kelly for all of her hard work and dedication to the BTSA/Induction Program.

The School Board adopted Resolution 5, Approval of Education Code Options for Teaching Assignments (Lawson, MacAvoy; 5-0).

The School Board approved the Provisional Internship Permit for:

· Anna LeCuyer, Geometry Teacher at North Star Academy;

· Jacob Havey, Multiple Subject Teacher at North Star Academy;

· Lynne Beekman, Special Education Teacher at Selby Lane School;

· Stacey Koolpe, Multiple Subject Teacher at Hoover School;

· Ashley Miller, Multiple Subject Teacher at Kennedy Middle School; (Paulson, McBride; 5-0).

  1. Board and Superintendent Reports

9.1 Report from Board Members and Superintendent

Vice-President McBride reported attending the Welcome Back breakfast for staff at McKinley Institute of Technology. Vice-President McBride thanked Superintendent Baker and administration for hosting a great event! Vice-President McBride reported attending a budget meeting, together with Trustee Paulson. Vice-President McBride thanked Superintendent Baker and Board President Díaz-Slocum for organizing the School Board retreat. Vice-President McBride added that he attended the Superintendent’s Advisory Council meeting and expressed that CBO Aquino-Dichoso had done a great job during her presentation.

Trustee Lawson reported meeting with Trustee MacAvoy and Ty Specht to discuss school site plans for the Bond Program.

Trustee MacAvoy reported meeting with the Bond Program to review school site plans. Trustee MacAvoy attended the Welcome Back breakfast and thanked Superintendent Baker for such a great event! Trustee MacAvoy also attended the Board Retreat and thanked Superintendent Baker and Board President Díaz-Slocum and all administrators that presented. Furthermore, Trustee MacAvoy attended the Silicon Valley Leadership Group Conference and added she attended a session on computer science. Trustee MacAvoy also met with Carol Elliot from San Carlos School District and discussed options for preschool for afterschool programming. Trustee MacAvoy expressed that San Carlos School District has many ideas and will share information with the School Board and Edna Carmona in the near future.

Trustee Paulson reported attending the High School Education Foundation.

President Díaz-Slocum reported attending some of the same events as other School Board Members. President Díaz-Slocum expressed feeling excited for all the trainings taking place and thanked everyone for their hard work during the presentations to the School Board.

Superintendent Baker reported attending a Redwood City Education Foundation (RCEF) meeting and commented that RCEF had fund raised $600,000 for this year. Furthermore, Superintendent Baker added that the PE+ costs are rising and City of Redwood City, Parks and Recreation are no longer able to provide funding for the program. Superintendent Baker added that an additional $60,000 is needed to keep the PE+ Program running. Superintendent Baker expressed that Sequoia Health Care District agreed to cover $30,000 and the Redwood City Education Foundation covered the remaining $30,000. Superintendent Baker further expressed that he will discuss the PE+ Program with principals, as principals have commented about their desire to keep the program at their school sites. Lastly, Superintendent Baker reported on the Superintendent’s Advisory Council meeting held earlier in the week.

Trustee Lawson reported receiving an email from the Redwood City Library Foundation requesting support for a grant.

Vice-President McBride reported receiving and responding to three emails from a Henry Ford School parent.

Trustee MacAvoy requested that the Redwood City Education Foundation (RCEF) provide the School Board with an update/report at a future board meeting.
