Nina LaPick

Nina I first came to Orion Alternative School in the fall of 1989…so, I am so proud to hold the title as the "longest standing" teacher at Orion. I feel so fortunate to have taught so many truly wonderful kindergarteners and first graders at Orion School over the years. As an Orion “veteran,” I feel very strongly about helping maintain the original vision of the parents, teachers and students who helped make this such a special school—teaching not just the academics and required state standards, but teaching to the “whole”child; creating a partnership with parents to support their child’s learning; and maintaining a community feel where children feel welcome and safe at school.

All of my many years of teaching experience have been with kindergarteners and first graders. I particularly love this age level. The students are so eager to learn and are open to new experiences. I also enjoy being part of the “magic” that comes with beginning to read. I earned my undergraduate degree in Social Ecology and completed the teacher education program at University of California, Irvine. I hold a California Multiple Subject Credential and a LDS (Language Development Specialist) certificate. I truly appreciate what I've learned(and continue to learn every day) from my creative and dedicated colleagues, many involved supportive parents, and bright, energetic students--all the "Stars of Orion."
