• Mr. Worthington's Physical Education Syllabus

     Grading breakdown 50%-Participation, 30%-Performance, 20%-dress

Participation- Every trimester each student starts with a total of 100 points or 100% equaling an A grade. Students lose points for not participating in the daily warm up or participating in the class activity. If a student can’t participate a note from a parent or guardian is required.

    1. Lack of participation during stretching and laps or push-ups and sit-ups.
    2. Lack of participation during the activity of the day.
    3. Being late or missing class due to behavior.
    4. Poor sportsmanship.

Performance- This grade is based on students’ ability to meet the states “standards” for physical fitness. The grading rubric is based on the expected results for Presidential score according to the state. We will run the mile twice each trimester, test on push-ups and sit-ups twice each trimester, and test the shuttle run twice each trimester. The students’ average grade for all 6 tests for that trimester will be the student’s grade for performance.

    Dress (begins September 3rd)

Students are expected to wear their (name on the back in sharpie) P.E. shirts daily. If a student does not wear their shirt they will receive a dress cut.  Students are expected to wear tennis shoes that they can run, kick and jump in.  Every dress cut is 1 point off a student’s dress grade.

Squads- Squads will be made by using the "Team Shake" app.  This will randomize teams every day.  Students will get to play with different classmates daily to build relationships, and help build teamwork.

Stretching Leaders- Mr. W will help with stretching the first 2 weeks. Each class will then have 2-4 stretching leaders to lead daily stretches.

Warm ups- Each student will be given a number that they will stand on every day.  Each student will be given 5 mins from when the bell rings to be standing on their number to begin the stretching and running.  Every day students will need to run 3 laps.

    Lap 1- jog warm up

Lap 2- Stop at the new turf play structure and do 20 push ups

Lap 3- Stop at the new turf play structure and do 20 sit ups

Finish- Get some water and relax until the entire class finishes to begin the activity for the day.

Passes- Bathroom passes and sign out sheet are mandatory.  Ask Mr. W and grab the pass.  Return pass and sign in when you return.

Why is it important to exercise?

    • Exercise helps kids achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.
    • Regular physical activity helps build and maintain strong, healthy muscles, bones and joints.
    • Exercise aids in the development of important interpersonal skills—this is especially true for participation in team sports.
    • Exercise improves the quantity and quality of sleep.
    • Research shows that exercise promotes improved school attendance and enhances academic performance.
    • Kids who exercise have greater self-esteem and better self-images.
    • Participating in regular physical activity prevents or delays the development of many chronic diseases (e.g., heart disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension) and promotes health.
    • Children who are active report fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression and a better overall mood.
    • Exercise helps improve motor coordination and enhances the development of various motor performance skills.
