    Accelerated Reader Family Celebration

Kudos to the grade 3-5 students who achieved their Accelerated Reader goals for all three trimesters this year! These students and their families will be celebrated this Thursday at 6:00 in the MUR.

Teachers in grades 3-5 will continue the Accelerated Reader program until the end of the year so that all students can meet their 3rd trimester goal.

    Lockdown Drill This Friday

All schools in Redwood City School District conduct monthly drills, such as earthquake and fire drills. This year Adelante also practiced a ‘shelter in place’, when the gas smell from the golf course came our way.

This Friday we will hold our yearly ‘lockdown’ drill. The teachers will discuss the drill with students beforehand (on Friday morning), and explain how to practice. Basically, teachers will present it as one of several kinds of drills that we practice. They will be matter-of-fact about it, and will speak in developmentally appropriate terms.   They will also de-brief with students afterwards, to go over what went well, and to talk about how they feel about the drill.  Please feel free to talk to your child both before and after the drill.   It can be presented as how we would react to an unknown animal on campus, or if there was something happening in the neighborhood. Our upper grade students may be aware of incidents of school violence, and may want to discuss it, but particularly for younger students, we do not want to alarm them.

    2nd- 3rd Grade Dance Performance

Our second and third grade students are ready to show off their dance troupe skills! The show will take place next Wed., 5/30 at Carrington Hall (at Sequoia High School). Students are required to arrive at the venue at 5:15. We will start seating audience members at about 6:15. The show starts at 6:30. Please be sure to bring clothing appropriate to the weather as you wait outdoors for entry into the auditorium.

    Classroom Allocation for 2018/19

Every year, the number of students enrolled at a school site determines the number of teachers allocated to classrooms. This is based on a student/teacher ratio of 28:1 in grades K-2, and 31:1 in grades 3-5. For the 2018/19 school year, Adelante has been allocated 17 classroom teachers. With our enrollment, we will have 2 fourth grade classrooms, 2 fifth grade classrooms, and 1 fourth/fifth grade classroom. I will be working with the upper grade teachers to organize this configuration. Together, we will continue to provide a robust program for all our fourth and fifth graders.

     Yearbooks

Purchase your yearbook online, www.mkt.com/unidos, until May 31st for $20. Yearbooks will be distributed the last week of school, June 4-7.  If you did not pre-purchase a yearbook, you may purchase one the last week of school (cash or credit card only, while supplies last).

    Book Giveaway

Many thanks to Tanja Vierra and volunteers for organizing the book giveaway last week. Our students were excited to select free books for their home libraries!

I want to give a huge thank you to the parent chairpersons of our last two community events. Kudos to Rory Sayres, who coordinated the STEM fair on March 22.   This event included both the science fair and the family science exploration night. • There are 13 more weeks of classes in this school year. The students are growing academically and socially. It is a pleasure to witness their growth, and to hear them articulate their learning in two languages. It’s easiest to see in our SEAL classrooms (grades K-3) when students lead their parents through a tour of the classroom at the end of each unit. Not only can the students provide detailed information about complex concepts, but they can explain it in whichever language their parents speak! ‘Pretty impressive!

I often reflect on how happy it makes me to be Adelante’s school leader. Today I was able to pinpoint a specific contributor to this… It’s laughter.  As I write this, I hear Claudia and Mayra laughing in the office. I can hear Sabrina laughing with two teachers in the workroom.  I constantly hear laughter in the recess yard and in the classrooms.   While serious dedication is a prime factor in student learning, student and staff happiness is also an essential component. Positive intent, positive energy and positive spirit are the defining attributes of our school. We are truly an amazing community. Thank you for your contributions to our students and teachers- as parents, you inspire us to work hard and to enjoy our perseverance in achieving student success in our dual immersion program. Thank you for your support!

The Kennedy Middle School principal, Sabrina Adler, will be meeting with Adelante parents on Thursday, March 29th, at 6:00, to discuss the program for our immersion students. Please mark your calendars to attend this informational meeting.

     Nut-free School

Adelante has students with nut allergies in every grade level. There are varying degrees of severity in these allergies- some are life-threatening. All grade levels have students switching rooms across the school day, and during the afterschool program. You may have seen the ‘No Nuts’ signs in your student’s homeroom class. We need for all parents to be cognizant of the ‘No Nuts’ rule across our campus. Please be vigilant about all the food you send to our campus, both for parties and for your child’s lunch. We want to secure the safety of all of our students. Thank you for your support.

New State Assessment for English Language Proficiency Begins This Month

This school year, students who have been identified as EL students will participate in the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) Summative Assessment. The ELPAC replaces the California English Language Development Test (CELDT), which is the current required state assessment for English language proficiency that must be given to students who are classified as English learners (EL). Our school district’s testing window for this school year is scheduled for February 1 to March 30, 2018. The ELPAC Summative Assessment is used to measure the skills of our students in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Results from the ELPAC will help our teachers identify the areas in which our students need additional support. Identifying the needs is important in order to provide students with the additional tools to be successful in English language arts/literacy, mathematics, science, and other subject areas in school.

     Punctuality Contest Results

The punctuality contest ended last week. Thank you for your support in getting your student/s to school punctually! We count on you to make every day a punctual one for our little ones!  Prizes:

    - The class with the highest punctuality rate was Room 18, Maestra Rita’s 4th grade class. Over the course of 20 days, they had only 3 tardies. They and their families will have a pizza and movie night with me on Friday, 3/9.

    - We have 6 classes that earned a pizza luncheon. These classes never exceeded 2 tardies in a day, and their total tardies for the month were low. The winners are: M. Garcia’s kindergarten class, Alondra’s 3rd grade class, M. Elanor’s 4th grade class and all 3 fifth grade classes!

    - We will also be acknowledging all the students who were at school on time for all days of the contest. These students will receive a slap bracelet.

    Congratulations to all!

     STEM Fair

We are planning an exciting evening of hands-on activities of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) on Thursday, March 22, 5:30-7:30pm.  This is a fantastic way to get students engaged about these topics, and to engage with the community!  But we need volunteers to make it happen. All levels of participation and background welcomed. If you would like to help plan this event or volunteer at the event, please contact Rory Sayres (sayres@gmail.com).

    The Family/School Compact

For this newsletter, the focus of our family compact is about attending required school conferences.  Adelante will be conducting family conferences during the week of March 12. By the Redwood City Teachers Association contract, the spring conferences are mandatory for families of students who are below grade level, and are optional for families of students who are at grade level. You will be receiving conference sign-ups from your teacher/s shortly. Please respond to your teacher’s communication promptly. As an administrator of an elementary school, I recommend that all parents schedule a meeting with their teacher to discuss student progress.

    Coding Club Volunteers Needed

Thanks to a volunteer parent, Adelante will be re-initiating the Coding Club for upper grade students. In order to offer the program to both fourth and fifth grade students, we need parent volunteers. If you are interested in helping, please contact Holly Lindquist at (858) 752-4453.

    Principal’s Message- Climate Survey

The annual climate survey opens this week. You should have received an email invitation from Dr. Baker today, to participate in the survey. I would like to get input from all families in our Adelante community. I am copying the email from Dr. Baker here:

    Dear RCSD Community,

Next week, our school district will launch the Annual RCSD Climate Survey and LCAP Survey.  We need your feedback to make sure that we continue to provide the high-quality, rigorous, and supportive learning experiences that meet our students’ needs.

It is important to us to understand what you think about a variety of factors influencing our students' education, such as family engagement, academic and social support, school safety, and other key areas. The window to participate in the survey will be open Monday, February 5 to Friday, February 23.
Please be on the lookout for a link to this survey via email on Monday, February 5. If you have more than one child in school, we would like for you to focus your answers on the experience of just your oldest child at their school. We recommend that only one survey is taken per household. You may receive reminder emails from Panorama Education, the organization that is administering the survey for the school district.

This survey provides very important information that will help us serve our students and we encourage you to participate. Both surveys were developed with input from parents and staff members.

     Thank you.

    Dr. John Baker, Superintendent

     The Family/School Compact

Team participation is essential to Adelante’s school philosophy. Parental involvement in developing positive habits at home is crucial to student success. Our focus for this newsletter is about punctuality. In the Home/School Compact, you agreed to adhere to the following:

See that my child attends school regularly and is on time.

Please help your child develop positive habits and organizational skills by supporting their punctual arrival at school. We are promoting this by featuring a

    Punctuality Contest.

    What is it?

It’s a competition between classes to be punctual in arrival to school.

    When is it?

The competition starts on Monday, January 22. It ends on Friday, February 16.

How will we count? The office will keep track of tardies each day. We will post a leaderboard so classes can check on their status daily. Note: the lower your score, the better!

Are there prizes?    Yes! There are three prize categories:

    1. The class with the highest punctuality rate (i.e., the lowest score) wins a Movie Night with pizza, hosted by Directora Chris. Parents and siblings are invited!
    2. All classes that maintain 2 or less tardies every day throughout the 20-day competition win a lunchtime pizza party!
    3. All students who arrive to school on time for every day of the contest will receive a slap bracelet!

    Community LCAP Meeting

The district will be conducting meetings in order to get input from parents regarding the priority needs of schools, and the allocation of some school funds. The meeting for Adelante will be held this Thurs., 2/1 at Clifford School. The meeting will be held in English with Spanish translation.  Come give your input! Feb. 1, from 6:00- 7:30 at Clifford School.

    Community Support for Immigrants

In support of our community, the Redwood City School District has developed informational materials for immigrant families. We have copies available in English and Spanish in the office. We are sending materials home today for ‘English as a second language’ families.

The district is organizing informational meetings for immigrant families. Once dates have been determined, we will promote these meetings on our Facebook page (Adelante Spanish Immersion School). Alternatively, feel free to call the district office for these dates, at 423-2200.

    Dress Code

About 95% of the students have been consistently following our dress code expectations. There are no exceptions or waivers to this policy -thank you for sending your child to school in proper dress code.

On a different note, the office has kids coming in from recess needing dry pants, and we don’t have enough to meet our needs (particularly for boys in the upper grades). If you have any outgrown dress code pants, we’d appreciate donations!

    Principal’s Message

Happy New Year and welcome back to school!

We’re excited to have the kids back with us, and we’re ready for a great round of learning. The next few months are typically a time of great growth- the children have matured since August, and are ready to take on more responsibility for their learning. In January and February we also see the fruition of all that they learned in the fall term.

Think back to your child’s reading and writing levels in August, and compare them to now. It’s beautiful- and you can only imagine what they’ll be able to do by June!

Thank you for your support as one of the three components (parent, student and teacher) for your child’s success.

    Flu Season

The seriousness of this year’s influenza has been a constant topic in the news lately. In order to protect our students and staff, we need all families to adhere to the guidelines regarding school attendance. Use the ‘24 hour’ rule to determine whether your child is permitted at school. Students need to be completely free of symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea and vomiting. For example, if your child wakes up with fever, diarrhea or vomiting on Tuesday morning, s/he cannot return to school on Wednesday, because s/he has not been symptom-free for 24 hours.

Last year, the San Mateo Board of Health had us turn off the water fountains, close the computer lab, restrict class movement and cancel the 5th grade promotion dinner because of illness. Please join us in taking the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the flu, by keeping children with symptoms at home. Also, please remind your children to wash/sanitize their hands often, and to cover their nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing. Thank you, Adelante community!

Adelante's Annual Winter Festival is Coming Up!

Friday, January 26, 2018, come and enjoy time and festivities with your school community. Parents with students in every grade are invited to volunteer and participate. There will be games, dance performances, basket raffles, and fun!

Wait. There's more! For the first year ever, we invite all families to participate in our Adelante Chili Cook Off. Compete to be the King or Queen of chili.

     Penny Drive

Save those pennies! The Penny Drive will be held from Wednesday 1/17 to Friday, Jan. 19.  The Penny Drive is a contest between grades. Pennies count towards a grade’s total points. Students put silver coins in the containers of other grades to make that grade’s points go down. The grade with the highest total wins a party.   This is a contest of strategy, and the kids love it!  The money raised goes toward paying for programs like music, P.E. and dance at our school.  Every penny counts!

Punctuality is important for your child and for our classrooms. When students arrive late, they miss the opportunity to settle into class, prepare their materials, and complete the first assignment of the morning. It is disconcerting for children. Additionally, students often feel uncomfortable being the center of attention as they enter the room.

Our school district is required to keep track of students’ late arrivals. Letters are sent home when students reach 3 tardies. The first tardy letter is a reminder. A second letter indicates a serious issue.

Starting on January 22, Adelante will have a month-long punctuality contest. Classes will compete to have the highest record of punctual attendance. We hope to reward numerous classes for having excellent punctuality!
