What Do I Do if My Neighborhood School Does Not Exist Anymore?

An RCSD Guide for Incoming Families

  • This year, RCSD embarked on a process called Planning for our Future to rethink how to focus on the organization’s mission: Educating Every Child for Success.

After a months-long process of working side by side with its parents, staff, and community members, Redwood City School District (RCSD) will transform from a school district of 16 sites to one of 12 sites while maintaining its unique and popular award-winning programs.

This transformation will take effect in 2019-20 and it means that the following schools will no longer serve as neighboring schools: Fair Oaks Community School, Hawes Elementary School, John Gill Elementary School and Selby Lane School.

The RCSD Board of Trustees approved for the school district to redraw the attendance zones for these neighborhoods and assign a new neighborhood school after a demographer studies the current attendance areas. In the meantime, and until the new attendance areas are redrawn, incoming families should follow the following process to enroll in RCSD.

  • 1. Fair Oaks Community School is my neighborhood school. What are my options now?

  • 2. Hawes Elementary School is my neighborhood school. What are my options now?

  • 3. John Gill Elementary School is my neighborhood school. What are my options now?

  • 4. I understand that the Orion Parent Participation Program is moving to the John Gill campus but I am interested in the Mandarin Immersion Program. Does this mean that the Mandarin Immersion Program is also now part of Orion?

  • 5. Selby Lane School is my neighborhood school. What are my options now?

  • 6. We are an Adelante Spanish Immersion School family. We have decided not to move to the Selby Lane campus. What are our options now?

  • 7. We are an Orion family. We have decided not to move to the John Gill campus. What are our options now?

  • 8. My child is a rising 6th grader for the 2019-20 school year. What are my options now?

  • Incoming families are invited to Meet RCSD Night, an evening to learn about the district’s culture of teaching and learning, its programs and offerings, and the registration and School of Choice process. This event takes place Thursday, January 10, 2019, at McKinley Institute of Technology (MIT), 400 Duane St. in Redwood City. Doors open at 5:30 PM. The presentation in English (with simultaneous Spanish translation) begins at 6:00 PM followed by a Meet & Greet from 6:15 PM until 7:30 PM.

The Enrollment and Schools of Choice Process for 2019-20 begins Friday, January 11. Families should take note of additional key dates found here for the registration and School of Choice timeline for the 2019-20 school year as deadlines and notices apply.
