SparkPoint
Serving families in the North Fair Oaks/Friendly Acres community of Redwood City
Summary: SparkPoint (SP) Centers are one-stop financial, career support, and education centers where families have access to a full range of services. SP pairs clients with a financial coach who helps create a step-by-step plan to achieve financial goals that include securing a good job, getting out of debt, going back to school, and saving money. SP commits to working with clients for up to 3 years to achieve financial success (all of our outcomes are tracked in a client outcomes tracking database managed by UWBA). By integrating SP centers with Community Schools, which already provide comprehensive wraparound supports for children, we help families gain a stable financial footing while supporting students’ well-being and academic success, taking a two-generation approach to ending the cycle of poverty.
SparkPoint Redwood City currently serves 80 families. Success in one year would mean at least 80% of families receiving financial coaching will make progress towards their financial or career goals (measured by at least a 5% improvement in income, credit, savings, debt). Children of these families will show improvements in their attendance or school performance.
Process
- Familes are recruited through RCSD’s Community School Coordinators, events, Able Works’ LiveAble Women cohorts, and Cañada College-led ESL financial literacy classes.
- LiveAble Women provides content expertise in areas of debt reduction, credit improvement, increased income, and building assets to cohorts of women. Cañada College’s ESL classes are 16-week ESL financial literacy classes offered at Redwood City Community Schools.
- Assessment of family needs and goal-setting
- On-going case management including financial coaching, career counseling, skill building workshops, and other supports.
- On-going assessment with families.
