Registration for 2021-22 School Year Begins November 2020

RCSD Begins Process to Welcome New Families and Offer Choice in Education

  • Families who will be new to Redwood City School District (RCSD) for the 2021-22 school year and current RCSD families looking to transfer to another program or school next August of 2021, will have the opportunity to start planning in November of 2020.

    RCSD is a stellar PreK-8 school district known for its very unique and popular award-winning programs. We invite families to visit the school district’s website to learn more about its 12 schools and programs.


    Here is the timeline to keep handy as we welcome you to RCSD and work with you to build the education foundation for your child!

    • Friday, November 13 through Tuesday, November 24:
      RCSD welcomes families of rising 3rd grade students interested in attending North Star Academy to sign up for the Cogat 7 assessment, which measures students in three different areas--Verbal, Non-Verbal, and Quantitative. Testing for the 2021-22 school year has been scheduled for December 2 through December 16 and interested parents need to sign up between November 13 through November 24. Parents with additional questions can visit North Star Academy’s website or call 650-482-2411.
    • Monday, November 30, 2020, 9 AM:
      Incoming TK and Kinder RCSD families can register their TK and Kinder student into their neighborhood school doing so online.

      Parents who would like to do the registration face to face can set up an appointment at their neighborhood school by calling their neighborhood school. Please note that appointments can also be made at the District Office by calling 650-482-2200 (please dial 0) or by emailing studentreg@rcsdk8.net. Please note that only one parent will be able to visit the school or the District Office at a time in order to follow social distancing guidelines. All visitors will need to wear a face covering.

    • A school staff member may contact families at a later date for additional required documents.
    • Families with children between the ages of two years and nine months and five years old can enroll their children in preschool, the RCSD Child Development Center (CDC), by calling (650) 482-2417, which is a separate process than enrolling in TK and Kinder).
    • Monday, November 30, 2020, 9 AM: 
      Incoming TK and Kinder RCSD families and current RCSD families looking to transfer to another program or school other than their neighborhood school may do so starting at this time by filling out an application for the first Schools of Choice application window. The application can be filled out online. 

      Parents who would like to fill out the application face to face can set up an appointment by calling the District Office at 650-482-2237 or by emailing mdavenport@rcsdk8.net.  Please note that only one parent will be able to visit the District Office at a time in order to follow social distancing guidelines. All visitors will need to wear a face covering. 

      The deadline to fill out the application is 3 PM on Friday, January 22. 

      (Please note: Families who fill out a School of Choice application with the intention to transfer to a different program or school other than their neighborhood school, will be entered into a random computerized lottery.)
    • Wednesday, December 2 through Wednesday, December 16:
      Rising 3rd grade students who signed up between November 13 through November 24 to take the Cogat 7 assessment for North Star Academy, will be participating in this assessment. Two time slots have been scheduled each day, the first at 11:00 a.m. and the second at 2:00 p.m. Parents with additional questions can visit North Star Academy’s website or call 650-482-2411. Assessment results will be mailed to parents during winter break.
    • Monday, January 11, 2021, 9 AM:
      New families for all grade levels (PreK-8) can register their incoming student into their neighborhood school by doing so online.

      Parents who would like to do the registration face to face can set up an appointment at their neighborhood by calling their neighborhood school. Please note that appointments can also be made at the District Office by calling 650-482-2200 (please dial 0) or by emailing studentreg@rcsdk8.net.       Parents interested in applying at North Star Academy may turn in their application starting on this date. Only students who have already participated in the Cogat 7 assessment in December of 2020 will be able to apply for the 2021-22 school year. Parents with additional questions can visit North Star Academy’s website or call 650-482-2411.
    • Friday, January 22, 2021, 3 PM: Applications close for parents of students interested in North Star Academy for the 2021-22 school year.
    • Friday, January 22, 2021, 3 PM: The first application window for the School of Choice process closes. All applications are entered into a random computerized lottery.
    • Friday, February 5, 2021, 3 PM: RCSD begins to notify parents of students who have been accepted to North Star Academy. This 1st Round of RCSD notification goes out via regular mail.
    • Friday, February 12, 2021, 3 PM: Deadline for parents of students who have been accepted to North Star Academy to confirm with the school on whether they will be accepting the spot. Parents who do not notify the school by this date will be removed from the list.
    • Friday, February 12, 2021, 3 PM: RCSD begins the 2nd Round of notifications. This notification is for program or school placement based on the parent’s School of Choice application and random lottery results. The district also will notify families if they are placed on a waitlist.

      The families who will be notified during this 2nd Round are parents of rising kindergartners at non-neighborhood schools, which are Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School, Mandarin Immersion, and Orion Alternative Elementary School as well as 6-8th graders at McKinley Institute of Technology (MIT).
    • Wednesday, February 17, 2021, 3 PM: Deadline for families in the 2nd Round to accept their school placement based on their School of Choice application and the lottery results.
    • Friday, February 26, 2021, 3 PM: RCSD begins to notify families in the 3rd Round of their program or school placement based on their School of Choice application and lottery results. The district also will notify families if they are placed on a waitlist.

      The families who will be notified during this 3rd Round are parents of kindergartners at all neighborhood schools, which are Clifford School, Roy Cloud School, Garfield Community School, Henry Ford Elementary School, Hoover Community School, Roosevelt School, and Taft Community School. 
    • Wednesday, March 3, 2021, 3 PM: Deadline for families in the 3rd Round to accept their school placement based on their School of Choice application and the lottery results.
    • Friday, March 19, 2021, 3 PM: RCSD begins to notify families in the 4th Round of their program or school placement based on their School of Choice application and random lottery results. The district also will notify families if they are placed on a waitlist.

      The families who will be notified during this 4th Round are parents of rising 1-8 graders at all schools with the exception of McKinley Institute of Technology (MIT) and North Star Academy.
    • Monday, April 5, 2021, 9 AM: The Schools of Choice process for the second application window for the 2021-22 school year opens for submission.

      (Note: The random lottery only takes place during the first application window of every school year. Families looking to transfer during the second application window in the spring of every school year are placed in the program, school or a waitlist based on the order that the application is received. In addition, North Star Academy is not available as an option during the spring. North Star’s process only takes place once a year.)
    • Friday, September 3, 2020, 3 PM: The second window for the School of Choice application process closes in its entirety for the 2021-22 school year.

      (Note: Families are notified of their placement on a case by case basis as each student is placed based on the order that their application was received.)
  • The registration and School of Choice process for the 2022-2023 school year opens for its first application window later during the 2021-22 school year.
