NGSS Curriculum and ImplementationRCSD will be implementing a Science Core Curriculum that aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in 2016-2017. NGSS curriculum will also be phased in during the 2017-18 school year, with full implementation occurring in 2018-2019. At the middle school level, a Core Curriculum is being developed for the Preferred Integrated Model adopted by the California State Board of Education. RCSD is supplementing the current curriculum with NGSS units created by Oakland Unified School District. In grades K-5, RCSD has adopted the FOSS curriculum developed by Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Current 2nd Edition FOSS Kits are being upgraded with supplemental NGSS materials.
CA State Science Testing2017-2018: CAST field testing for the NGSS will be take place for 5th and 8th grade students in spring, 2018. More information will be provided about the test as it is released by the CDE.2018-2019: Official CAST testing based on the NGSS will commence this year for ALL students.The CAST Fact Sheet is available from the CA Department of Education.Teacher Credential AuthorizationInformation about Credential Authorization to teach the NGSS in Middle School is provided from the CSTA.
