After graduating from U.C. Santa Barbara, I started teaching in 1993 at Charles Armstrong School in Belmont. I taught 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th grades. I left teaching to be more involved in my children's lives while they were young. I returned to teaching at John Gill in 2015 and I am so happy to be back.
I believe that the best way to reach the diverse needs of all of my students is through a teaching style that is a combination of many approaches. During the school day, some lessons are very teacher directed, some are small group oriented, and some lessons have students working independently at their own levels on more exploratory learning. Because I was trained in multi-sensory approaches to language arts instruction, I incorporate a lot of multi-sensory teaching in my classroom, where we integrate visual, auditory, and kinesthetic movement. I find this helpful, especially for my English Learners.
I ultimately enjoy teaching reading and writing. It is truly magical to see the progress children make at this age, as well as, see their excitement as the world opens up for them when they can finally make sense of those letters on a page. I love seeing my classes come together as a community of learners and friends, who support and look out for one another.
