The Redwood City School District has developed attendance policies and procedures in order to comply with California state law. The following is our attendance program protocol.
Unexcused (Letter 1)
In accordance with the State of California’s Education Code [EC § 48260-48273], when any pupil is absent from school for 3 days or more without a valid excuse, and/or tardy 3 or more times in excess of 30 minutes, we must notify the parent/guardian. Parents will receive a letter from the school administrator.
Excused (Excessive Excused Absence Letter 1)
Parents will receive an attendance letter from the school after 7+ excused absences.
Unexcused (Letter 2)
Parents will receive a second letter after 6+ unexcused absences and/or tardies. This letter is signed by the District’s Attendance Coordinator and may be followed with a phone call or a request for a group attendance meeting.
Excused (Excessive Excused Absence Letter 2)
Parents will receive a second attendance letter from the school after 10+ excused absences. Per district policy, upon 14 or more days of excused absences, we require that any further absences for illness be verified by a physician. If verification is not provided, any further absences will be considered unexcused and subject to district truancy policies.
Unexcused (Letter 3)
Parents will receive a third letter after 9+ unexcused absences. This letter is also signed my the District’s Attendance Coordinator and may be followed up with a Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) hearing wherein the Redwood City Police Department is asked to participate.
We hope this information has helped you to better understand Redwood City School District’s attendance program protocol.
