Clifford School is among a small list of Kent Award winners this spring for its implementation of and partnership with the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education (NUA). The annual Kent Award highlights innovative, inspiring, and outstanding programs in San Mateo County Schools.

Modeling positive behaviors and rewarding children for taking those affirmative steps goes a long way, according to research, and schools nationwide are adopting a structured model for that called PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support.

The National Urban Alliance for Effective Education (NUA), an RCSD partner, thanked the Board of Trustees for their support of “thoughtful dialogue around equity and pedagogy” in RCSD. The NUA’s “Pedagogy of Confidence” involves three phases in understanding and learning: Developing, Deepening, and Demonstrating. This aligns with RCSD’s core belief that children learn and succeed when we act on the principle that every child can and will learn.

San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools Nancy Magee recently visited Clifford School to observe the strength-based strategies RCSD teachers are using in classrooms to close opportunity gaps. Clifford School, a National Urban Alliance for Effective Education (NUA) lab school, has become a model for approaches that identify and activate student strengths.

The parents of students in Redwood City School District (RCSD) are an enthusiastic bunch. They’re thrilled with the way their little loved ones learn – specifically, they credit the teachers, the schools’ respective cultures and value communication from teachers, staff and administration. 

Members of local Rotary Clubs met at Clifford School in Redwood City to plant 30 native oak trees surrounding the staff parking lot in an effort to restore the area’s natural meadows while replacing eucalyptus that presented hazards.
