REGULAR BOARD MEETING

1.         Call to Order  

 

President Díaz-Slocum called the Closed Session meeting to order at 6:14 p.m.

 

Present at the Closed Session Meeting: President María Díaz-Slocum, Vice-President Cecilia I. Márquez; Trustees Janet Lawson, Mike Wells, and Alisa MacAvoy; and Superintendent Baker. 

 

Others present at the Closed Session Meeting: Wendy Kelly.

President Díaz-Slocum reported that the School Board received an update from administration and no action was taken. 

 

5.         Welcome

 

5.1     Welcome by the School Board President, María Díaz-Slocum

 

President Díaz-Slocum welcomed those present.  The School Board dispensed with the Pledge of Allegiance.    

 

Others Present During the Regular Board Meeting:  Wendy Kelly, Liz Wolfe, Priscilla Aquino-Dichoso, Jorge Quintana, Antonio Pérez, Kyle Brumbaugh, Itzel Ramírez, Gonzálo Cordova, Will Robertson, Amy Gerstein, Michelle Griffith, Eliana García and 60 other attendees.

 

6.         Changes to the Agenda

 

Will Robertson from the Bond Program requested to pull Bond Program Consent Item 10.2 and made a minor change to the title of Consent Item 10.5.  Instead of reading Atlas Pellizzari, it should read, “Vanden Bos.”

The board approved the agenda as amended, (Wells/Lawson; 5-0).

9.         School/Community Reports

 

9.1  Redwood City School District Mental Health Program and Stanford University Collaborative  

 

The Redwood City School District and Stanford’s John Gardner Center have had an impactful partnership which has included: research, collaboration, and program planning.  In October 2020, the Redwood City School District and Sequoia Union High School District, with support from Stanford University, launched a collaborative effort to recognize and address the critical mental health needs of Redwood City students and their families. 

 

Through the aforementioned collaborative, Stanford University has expanded capacity-building research efforts from the Graduate School of Education’s John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Communities and clinical and systems consultation from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences’ Center for Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing (MTSS) framework for tiered support. 

 

Since the beginning of the collaboration in January 2021, Stanford partners have provided an array of support, such as: technical assistance and clinical expertise to RCSD district leaders in systemic capacity building and evidence-based, school-based mental health practices and processes, including school-wide intervention strategies; supported RCSD’s return to school in fall of 2021 by hosting a 90-minute webinar titled, “Reopening School and Mental Health.”  

 

Both RCSD administrators and Stanford University Collaborative presented to the School Board about their collaborative effort in providing resources to RCSD students’ and their families’ to support and strengthen their mental health, as needed.  

 

The School Board and Superintendent Baker thanked the Stanford University’s John Gardner Center and RCSD Administration for their great work and advocacy in providing mental health support for many students and their families in the Redwood City School District.

14.      Board and Superintendent Reports

 

14.1  Report from Board Members and Superintendent

 

Trustee Wells did not have a report.   

 

Trustee Lawson reported attending a Policy Committee meeting, together with Trustee MacAvoy and Deputy Superintendent Kelly.  Trustee Lawson also reported attending a Redwood City Together meeting.   

 

Vice-President Márquez reported attending a Child Nutrition Services Committee meeting, together with President Díaz-Slocum.  Vice-President Márquez commented that the committee welcomed Jessica Shade, an RCSD parent, and discussed enrollment, unaudited actuals, and received an update from Anna Lague and Patricia Corea, specifically discussing equipment needs, labor shortages, and severe supply chain disruptions. 

 

Trustee MacAvoy attended a Policy Committee meeting and also attended a Redwood City Together meeting.  Furthermore, Trustee MacAvoy attended a Safe Routes to School meeting.  Trustee MacAvoy commented that RCSD is participating in a pilot where bus passes are being delivered to migrant education, foster youth, homeless, and free and reduced lunch students.  Trustee MacAvoy commented if the pilot goes well, the program will continue. 

 

President Díaz-Slocum reported attending a Child Nutrition Services Committee meeting and thanked the staff for putting all the data together to present to the committee.  President Díaz-Slocum also met with the Chair of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquent Prevention Commission.  President Díaz-Slocum added that the Commission is interested in seeing what is happening in the elementary schools. 

 

Superintendent Baker commented that he has attended many of the same events as School Board members.  Superintendent Baker thanked Dr. Shanna Laney and Deputy Superintendent Kelly for organizing Covid testing on weekends.  Superintendent Baker commented that there is Covid-19 testing for RCSD students on Sundays at the District Office.

15.1  Contact Update Information and Credit Card Summary

 

There were no comments and/or questions from the School Board and Superintendent Baker. 

 

15.2  Information Regarding Recent iReady Diagnostic Exam Results

 

Liz Wolfe, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services provided the School Board with information about the December 2021 iReady districtwide assessment results and the comparison with the September results. 

 

The iReady test assessed students’ reading and math scores during Winter of 2021. 

 

Based on the presented scores, Assistant Superintendent Wolfe commented that there will be iReady tranings at each site led by iReady trainers; there will be support in the use of individualized student lessons; complement i-Ready instructional lessons with other strategies to accelerate learning; the reading, math teacher leadership groups will continue and a tutoring program will begin. 

 

The School Board thanked Assistant Superintendent Wolfe and Jenny Tran for all of their hard work on the presentation.

 

16.      Correspondence

 

Vice-President Díaz-Slocum reported receiving emails from Mandarin Immersion Program parents and Child Nutrition Services.
