APPROVED MINUTES OF BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

May 7, 2020

BOARD RETREAT AND SUPERINTENDENT’S EVALUATION

 VIA TELECONFERENCE

1.         Call to Order  

 

President Alisa MacAvoy called the board meeting to order at 6:01 p.m. via Zoom Teleconference Meeting.

 

2.         Welcome

 

President Alisa MacAvoy welcomed those present. 

 

Present at the Board Retreat Meeting via Zoom: President Alisa MacAvoy, Vice-President María Díaz-Slocum, Trustees Cecilia I. Márquez, Janet Lawson, Mike Wells and Superintendent John Baker.

 

Others Present: Wendy Kelly, Linda Montes, and Liz Wolfe. 

 

3.         Changes to the Agenda

 

There were no changes made to the agenda. 

 

4.         Approval of Agenda

 

The board approved the agenda as submitted, (Díaz-Slocum/Lawson; 5-0).

 

5.         Oral Communication

 

None.

 

6.         Discussion Items

6.1. Review of RCSD’s Beliefs/Values, Mission and Vision (11:00-12:30pm) – Open to the Public

 

The School Board, Superintendent Baker and administration discussed RCSD’s beliefs, values, mission, and vision. 

 

The School Board agreed that the following Mission, Vision and Values would be placed on the May 19th board agenda for approval:

 

Mission:

 

RCSD creates a safe and supportive, inspirational and rigorous, joyful and inclusive environment for all learners.

 

Vision:

 

RCSD will be a thriving, dynamic, innovative, and nurturing community where each student realizes their unique gifts and strength to achieve high intellectual performances for personal and academic success. 

 

Our Values:

 

RCSD has a collective responsibility to achieve our vision through a commitment to these values:

 

Innovation:  To analyze systemic practices, including racial biases, through an equity consciousness lens that dismantle barriers to student learning and emotional well-being.

 

Student Voice:  To encourage students’ bravery, voice and leadership.

 

Equity: To instill passion in learning emphasizing student strengths and gifts for all learners: all abilities, all ethnicities and cultural identities, LGBTQ+ youth, and multilingual learners.

 

Engagement:  To offer opportunities and access to joyful, rigorous, and enriching instruction and resources.

 

Partnerships:  To build family and community partnerships for student success. 

 

The School Board and Superintendent Baker discussed that the Board goals would have to be updated soon. 

7.         Superintendent’s Evaluation (1:00pm-2:30pm) – Closed to the Public

 

At 1:00pm, the School Board and Superintendent Baker went in to Closed Session to discuss the Superintendent’s evaluation. 

 
8.         Adjournment (Action Required)

 

The board adjourned the Closed Session meeting at 2:30 p.m. (Wells, Díaz-Slocum; 5-0).
