J. Russell Kent Award Winning Kindergarten Program
In 2009, the Roosevelt Kindergarten team was awarded the prestigious San Mateo County School Boards Association J. Russell Kent Exemplary Program Award.
The Kent Award was awarded for Roosevelt's Kindergarten Targeted Literacy Instruction Groups. The Kindergarten Targeted Literacy Instruction Groups are designed to customize the learning experience in reading instruction for each student. It is a collaborative approach to analyzing student progress and implementing literacy instructional strategies. Specialized tasks and activities based on the students' literacy levels are assigned appropriately within the groups. This collaboration occurs across the grade level, and the students are shared among the team during the literacy block of time. In this day and age where students are entering Kindergarten at different levels of experience with literacy, the Roosevelt Kindergarten team's approach to reading instruction is creative and innovative.
